ABSTRACT:
The U.S., China, and other nations are pouring money into quantum computing, terrified of being left behind–especially as quantum mechanics is widely viewed as ineffable and as close to magic as we get in our scientific age. (Neither of those are true.) While quantum mechanics and its application to quantum computing is abstract, especially to novices, I will de-mystify the basics and outline both the promises and the challenges for practical quantum computing.
