Partners

The Computational Science Research Center has built lasting alliances with many world-renowned national labs and industry partners from around the globe. From providing exceptional internships for our graduate students to contributing invaluable input as members of our scientific and advisory boards; our partners are working with us to continuously fine-tune our graduate programs, with the shared goal of making our Computational Science Ph.D. and Master’s programs the strongest in the country. The annual culmination of this process is our ACSESS (Applied Computational Science & Engineering Student & Computational Science Curriculum Development) event each spring. In this yearly panel discussion, educators and industry representatives meet to discuss the merits of the CSRC’s interdisciplinary programs, and generate fresh ideas for curriculum improvement.

The CSRC has teamed with Qualcomm to create a Professional Science Master’s degree program specifically tailored for Qualcomm employees. Located on Qualcomm’s San Diego campus, the PSM is driven by real-world problems and is project-based and business-oriented. http://www.qualcomm.com

Argonne National Laboratory: A DOE national laboratory located about 25 miles from Chicago, Argonne is recognized for its excellence in connecting basic research to innovative technology. Argonne is also a leader in addressing the nation’s critical scientific and technological problems, attracting scientists and engineers from all over the world to open new possibilities for the future.

CAIDA: The Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) investigates practical and theoretical aspects of the Internet in order to: provide macroscopic insights into Internet infrastructure, behavior, usage, and evolution; foster a collaborative environment in which data can be acquired, analyzed, and (as appropriate) shared; improve the integrity of the field of Internet science; and inform science, technology, and communications public policies.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory: Berkeley Lab is a member of the national laboratory system supported by the US Department of Energy through its Office of Science. It is managed by the University of California (UC) and is charged with conducting unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines. Berkeley Lab was founded in 1931 by physicist and Nobel laureate Ernest Orlando Lawrence, who believed that scientific research is best done through teams of individuals with different fields of expertise, working together. His teamwork concept is a Berkeley Lab legacy that continues today.

Los Alamos National Laboratory: Located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Los Alamos’ mission is to develop and apply science and technology to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the US nuclear deterrent; reduce global threats; and solve other emerging national security challenges.

The CSRC and Los Alamos work together to provide internships for our graduate students. LANL offers the Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) Program, a year-round educational program that provides students with relevant research experience while they are pursuing a graduate degree. In some cases, students can arrange to conduct masters or doctoral thesis research at LANL. http://www.lanl.gov

San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC): SDSC is a strategic resource to science, industry and academia, offering leadership in the areas of data management, grid computing, bioinformatics, geoinformatics, data-intensive computing, as well as other science and engineering disciplines. The mission of SDSC is to extend the reach of scientific accomplishments by providing tools such as high-performance hardware technologies, integrative software technologies, and deep interdisciplinary expertise to the community.

The NSF has awarded the CSRC a grant for a high-speed network that will connect SDSU directly with the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The network will promote cutting-edge research at SDSU, in areas including: service-oriented and distributed software development, ocean systems modeling, earthquake research, and new visualization resources to support metagenomic gene sequencing, quantum chemistry, etc. http://www.sdsc.edu

Sandia Laboratory: Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sandia is supported by the DOE through its National Nuclear Security Administration. Established in 1949, Sandia has developed science-based technologies that support our national security. Today, over 300 million Americans depend on Sandia’s technology solutions to solve national and global threats to peace and freedom. Through science and technology, Sandia’s mission is to meet national needs in five key areas: nuclear weapons, energy and infrastructure assurance, nonproliferation, defense systems and assessments, and homeland security and defense.

Sandia offers our graduate students summer internships where they are employed on a full- time basis while enrolled in school actively pursuing the completion of a degree. http://www.sandia.gov/index.html

Sandia Laboratory (Livermore, CA): Sandia National Laboratories is a premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation. Sandia is one of three Defense Programs laboratories in the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and has two main facilities, the original laboratory and corporate headquarters in Albuquerque, N.M., and a second R&D laboratory in Livermore, CA. The R&D programs at Sandia/California encompass many different scientific disciplines and are spread out among several facilities equipped with state-of-the-art research tools and instruments.

Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC): TACC’s mission is to enable discoveries that advance science and society through the application of advanced computing technologies. To this end, TACC supports and consults with leading researchers in every field of science; teach classes and provide training, both in the US and abroad; and develop new methods and techniques to increase the capabilities of high-performance computing across the nation.

Universidad Autonoma de Baja California (UABC): The UABC aims to promote viable alternatives to the social, economic, political and cultural entity of Baja California and Mexico as a whole, in terms of plurality, equality, respect and sustainability, thereby contributing to a more just, democratic and respectful environment. One of the means by which this is accomplished is through the generation of scientific and humanistic knowledge, as well as applications and technological developments relevant to sustainable development in Baja California, Mexico, and the world in general.

University of Zurich: The University of Zurich is one of the leading research universities in Europe. It is also an institution devoted to free and public scholarly pursuit and scientific inquiry. Scholarly pursuit incorporates the acquisition, advancement and dissemination of knowledge in a methodical and critical manner. Faculty research priority programs include: computational science, experimental and theoretical astrophysics, and Earth observation and geoinformatics.

Weidlinger Associates, Inc.: A leading structural engineering and applied mechanics consultant, Weidlinger designs and rehabilitates buildings, bridges, and infrastructure, and develop advanced analysis software. They also offer special services in vulnerability assessment; risk analysis; forensic, earthquake, wind, and blast engineering; soil/structure interaction; and sustainability. The synergy of applied science research and structural engineering practice sets Weidlinger apart, and leads to participation on projects of national and international significance.
