ABSTRACT:


It is well known that symmetry can restrict the form of a system of differential equations and, consequently, of its solutions. The mathematical representation of these restrictions is group theory. Thus we use ideas and methods from group theory to explore the patterns of behavior of various (seemingly unrelated) physical phenomena: flames, magnetic sensors, coupled oscillators, gyroscopes, and interacting bubbles. These phenomena are part of research work conducted by four Ph.D. students and one M.S. student in collaboration with SPAWAR, San Diego, and with Oak Ridge National Lab.
