ABSTRACT: It is well known that the inviscid Burgers equation poses several numerical challenges when used in modeling fluid flows and gas dynamics. The non-linear equation leads to sharp discontinuities or shocks as the initial condition evolves over time. In this work, the high order mimetic difference methods are investigated for the numerical solution of the inviscid Burgers equation. The mimetic methods are based on developing discrete analogs of the vector calculus identities for divergence and gradient. By construction, these operators satisfy a global conservation law, with high spatial order of accuracy. These operators achieve even orders of accuracy at the boundaries and interiors of the grids, and can be easily applied to two and three-dimensional curvilinear and non-uniform grids. The application of the high order mimetic operators using the open-source library MOLE in capturing the shocks for the inviscid Burgers equation is presented in this work.
