ABSTRACT:
The smart materials, active structures and intelligent systems field encompasses basic material research to complex multifunctional system design and development. Being a multidisciplinary field, it requires a “Jack of all trades” person to execute seemingly unrelated development programs. It is possible and perhaps necessary to be successful in academia by continuous research in a small subset of this field. Quite contrary to this, to survive, applied industrial research and development undergoes mutations in response to market forces. I will discuss my work in SMASIS area from academia to industry in this context. Projects from actuators and sensor development, structural health monitoring, multifunctional materials and structures, and complex systems will be highlighted to demonstrate unity in the diversity of
research. Talk will be concluded by reflecting on challenges and opportunities for a small company like NextGen Aeronautics in the SMASIS field.
