GMCS 314

SPEAKER:

Dr. Jérôme Gilles, Mathematics, San Diego State University

ABSTRACT:

These days, data science can be found everywhere and the demand of data scientist on the job market is still increasing. But data science can encompass a lot of different problems as well as methods. In this talk, I will show some of my personal contributions in applied mathematics (like empirical wavelets, restoration algorithms,…) and their applications. I will illustrate applications like: how texture analysis permitted to extract some “hidden” science from scanning tunneling microscopy images, how the impact of atmospheric turbulence can be mitigated, and small moving targets can be detected through the turbulence, how the mechanical behavior of certain types of materials can be predicted,… I will conclude this talk with some exciting perspectives as well as some challenges.
