ABSTRACT:
Finding your way through academics and a career in Computational Science and Engineering
(CSE) can be difficult as pathways appear opaque. We discuss our methodology and programs
aimed at creating sustainable CSE pathways. Our approach is unique in two ways: 1) we
apply a model that focuses on developing the whole scientist through academic and
psychosocial support combined with career, professional, and leadership development and
2) we use proven methods and our extensive experience in developing many of the nation’s
finest scientist and engineers in the mainstream scientific environments. A unique outcome
is that we cultivate a diverse science and technology workforce prepared to be leaders
and add new dimensions to innovation. As examples of the model, we discuss programs designed
to help faculty and students develop research collaborations with Department of Energy
National Laboratory staff, as well as the Broader Engagement program at the Society of
Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Important aspects of both of these programs is that
there is a focus on mainstream CSE environments and that activities support the development
of students and faculty while also engaging and educating the broader community. The over-arching
goal is to catalyze community transformation towards the normalization of inclusion such that
everyone is welcome and productive and inclusion is the norm.
