ABSTRACT:

At SSC San Diego, high-end computing began in the 1970’s and has grown along with the capabilites of computers over the intervening decades. This talk will briefly summarize early work in HPC at the Laboratory and take you through some of the changes that have occurred as our computing systems have meandered through the briar patch that is computational science in the late 20th and early 21st Centuries. A brief history and description will be given of the DoD HPC Modernization Program a major influence on computational science at our Center and the broader DoD technical community. Highlights of a few of our Centers current HPC projects will be presented and discussed. At the end of the talk, I will discuss our vision of how recent high-end computing trends will impact the solution of complex problems we face in real time and interactive computational environments.
