ABSTRACT:

Earthquakes have a vast socio-economic impact to a community due to the associated fatalities, monetary and downtime losses. Numerical tools able to correctly predict the strength of structural elements are extremely important, especially after the tragic structural failures we witnessed this current year (e.g., the Miami Surfside Condominium collapse in June). Besides strong numerical tools, novel imagery acquisition techniques may aid structural engineers in assessing structural performance by evaluating seismic damage in concrete structures.

In this talk we will overview recent computational efforts to advance the seismic assessment of concrete structures. A multiple vertical line finite element model available in OpenSees is used to predict the response of concrete shear walls. Results show a reasonable level of accuracy of the selected modeling approach up to strength before wall degradation occurs. In addition, data acquisition of point clouds is obtained from LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scans and analyzed to quantify damage after a seismic event and improve structural performance assessment.
