ABSTRACT:
Modern observing and modeling systems produce data at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. Cyberinfrastructure to handle these challenging volumes of data cannot be supported by many legacy software systems. This talk will describe the results from experiences building a scalable spatial cyberinfrastructure to support a range of applications from field observing programs to climate modeling and analysis to illustrate the issues surrounding data acquisition, transportation, data reduction and visualization. This talk will give examples of interoperability interface requirements, metadata production, data publication and the range of visualization requirements and the limitations of interactive data manipulation. Examples illustrating these aspects of cyberinfrastructure design and operation include 1) data fusion of shipboard observations with remote-sensing data at a range of spatial and temporal scales, 2) transportation and subsetting of climate model output and 3) construction of very high resolution topographic maps from multi-source data including LIDAR and bathymetry. The talk will close with a discussion of a scalable approach to the publication of scientific data in a new way that integrates it naturally into the existing universe of scholarly publication.
