Abstract
The oil and gas industry are a perfect target for applications of mathematics techniques. From subsurface exploration to production, refining, transport and finally distribution of oil, gas and products, real life mathematical and decision problems arise continuously. This mini-workshop aims at bringing together scientists and engineers from academia, research laboratories, and industry, to promote the application mathematics techniques to the oil and gas industry problems. Papers on all aspects of mathematical theory, and computational and applied mathematics focus to solve oil and gas industry problem are invited to be presented at the mini-workshop.

CFD Modeling of Pressure Drop on Fixed Packed Beds
The aim of this study is the computational fluid dynamics simulation of single phase pressure drop in fixed packed beds. A vast amount of literature has been published on experimental studies for pressure drops in infinity packed beds and some of them in other configurations. The experiments shows that the pressure drop through uniform spherical packed beds depend on porosity and flow rate, and it is not related to the spheres spatial distribution. Usually the spheres are packed in a random way, in the present study the spheres were not randomly distributed, they were organized in a cubic close packing. To achieve the desired porosity the distance between the balls centers was uniformly increased. The CFD simulations results were compared with the correlations from different authors and with experimental data. The results show very good agreement for both laminar and turbulent regime.

Keywords: Pressure drop, packed beds, CFD.
