ABSTRACT:

The basic reproduction number (RO) is one of the most important indices in the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. It has several applications to prevention and control of disease epidemics, regarding herd immunity, vaccination, and therapy, etc. In this talk, I will present the basic concept of RO for various diseases with transmission through air, vector, and environment. I will then demonstrate how mathematical models can be used to estimate the basic reproduction numbers and use them for the control and prevention of epidemics. We use our models to compute the basic reproduction number of COVID-19 and predict the epidemic outcomes under potential intervention strategies.
