ABSTRACT:
During the last few years, the creation of new nanostructures with very interesting physical/chemical properties has called a lot of attention. A major problem is that when we get down to the nanoscale, the structures are not as pure as we want, and it becomes rather difficult to take advantage of the observed or predicted properties. This fact requires new experimental processes that help cleaning the nanostructures from defects, vacancies, etc. I will discuss two possible scenarios, where nanostructure surgery can be performed from application of femtosecond laser pulses, or in the case of finite systems the application of isotropic pressures. In addition, I will review the basic theory used to simulate the experimental set up and present examples with positive outcomes.
