1. Introduction into R

The open source software R (http://www.r-project.org) is a programming language and integrated suite of software facilities for statistical computing and graphical display. It is widely used for statistic software development and data analysis. The R environment is free and runs on all common operation systems. This workshop provides an entry-level introduction into R covering the following topics: (1) preliminaries, (2) simple manipulations, (2) basic R objects, (3) data import/export, (4) writing functions, and (5) graphical procedures.

2. Getting Started with LaTeX

LaTeX is a document preparation system designed to produce publication-quality typesetting, especially for mathematical text. Working with a markup language is different from working with a word processor; you need to mark up the source file and add commands to format the text. Following a quick introduction, you will find that it is intuitive to typeset an article. This workshop also provides an introduction to Beamer - a LaTeX class for creating presentations.

How to get LaTeX:
  • Windows   Download MiKTeX 2.7. Among several text editors for LaTeX, I recommend the LaTeX editor, LEd.
  • Linux   You should already have LaTeX pre-installed. Check your software source for LaTeX package.
  • MacOS X   If you do not already have LaTeX installed, MacTex is recommended.
