Graduate Programs
The Computational Science graduate program
at San Diego State University's CSRC is
a novel educational initiative. The aim
of the program is to educate professional
researchers capable of effectively utilizing
modern computational tools to tackle a
variety of cutting-edge scientific problems.
The distinctive feature of the program
is its interdisciplinary character; computation
as a fundamental tool is emphasized as
the program exposes students to a broad
cross section of the applied sciences.
The CSRC achieves its interdisciplinary
status by partnering students with courses
and professors from the applied sciences:
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science,
Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, and
Physics. The Computational Science student
is free to pursue coursework and research
from this wide range of disciplines.
We offer a doctoral degrees in Computational
Science and Computational Science with
concentration in Statistics in conjunction
with Claremont Graduate University (CGU).
The program features courses and research
projects under the supervision of SDSU
faculty from the departments of Biology,
Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering,
Geology, Mathematics, and Physics, and
with cooperation of the faculty at CGU.
We also offer two Master of Science degrees,
the M.S., a thesis masters, and the PSM,
which is project based and business oriented.
Both have an interdisciplinary cast and
are offered in collaboration with the
departments of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry,
Geological Sciences, Mathematics, Computer
Science, and Physics.
The M.S. thesis is done in conjunction
with a carefully managed extramural research
program to prepare graduates for positions
in scientific research, scientific programming,
and software engineering.
The PSM masters, being business based,
leads to careers in management of technology
and in a wide variety of fields. It is
offered in conjunction with the Sloan
Foundation supported PSM programs around
the country. The program was launched
in response to industry requests for better-trained
professionals with advanced degrees.
