SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY
Department of Biology
In cooperation with the SDSU Program in Computational Science, the SDSU Department of Biology seeks to fill a position in Structural Biology at the level of Assistant Professor.

A Ph.D. degree, or the equivalent, is required and postdoctoral experience is preferred. Candidates are expected to establish an externally funded research program, and demonstrated ability to obtain funding is a plus. The successful applicant will employ state-of-the-art physical techniques in the structural study of biological macromolecules, macromolecular assemblies and/or subcellular organelles. The SDSU Biology Department and the San Diego community offer a strong environment for research in Structural Biology. The Department of Biology is comprised of approximately 19 full time faculty in the areas of cell and molecular biology, and 23 full time faculty in ecology and evolutionary biology. The department serves approximately 1200 majors and 1500 general education students. Department faculty research is supported by approximately $20 million/year in extramural funding. Cell and molecular biology faculty are currently housed in a building with newly renovated labs that includes a BSL3 lab, a transgenic mouse core, confocal and electron microscopy imaging facility, and a flow cytometry facility. The SDSU Electron Microscopy Facility houses an FEI Tecnai 12 transmission electron microscopy equipped for cryo-electron microscopy and a Tietz 214 cooled slow scan CCD camera as well as a Leica SP2 confocal light microscope and other ancillary equipment. The SDSU Macromolecular X-ray Crystallography Facility in the Department of Chemistry houses a Rigaku RU-H3R 18 kW rotating anode x-ray generator with Osmic Blue x-ray optics, an inverted phi goniostat, Oxford Cryostream cryostat, R-AXIS IV++ image plate detector, Pentium III computer with Crystal Clear data collection and analysis software, and a Haskris R300 water chiller. The Chemistry Department also maintains 400, 500, and 600 MHz Varian NMR spectrometers. SDSU is affiliated with and linked directly to the San Diego Supercomputing Center.

The successful candidate will complement the research expertise of current faculty. Candidates employing high resolution cryo-electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction/crystallography, and/or multi-dimensional NMR spectroscopy are encouraged to apply, although highly qualified applicants in other areas of structural biology will be considered.

The successful candidate will become a member of our Molecular Biology M.S. degree program and the Cell and Molecular Biology Ph.D. degree program and will be expected to teach in both our graduate and undergraduate programs. The M.S. program currently serves ~75 students who perform thesis research at SDSU or at several biotechnology companies in the San Diego area. The Ph.D. program is operated jointly with UCSD and currently serves 42 students who perform their thesis work in the labs of SDSU investigators. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a course in Structural Biology and/or Biophysics for senior undergraduate and graduate students and to participate in other undergraduate or graduate courses in cell and molecular biology. Candidates with experience in and/or commitment to working in a multicultural environment with large numbers of students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles are desired. The College of Sciences is host to a large number of federally-funded minority training programs (e.g., MARC, MBRS, McNair and PREP) and SDSU is ranked 10th in the nation in conferring baccalaureate degrees to minorities.

Review of applications will begin after October 8, 2007, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, separate statements of research and teaching interests, three representative publications, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the Structural Biology Search Committee, Department of Biology, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 92182-4614.
